How to Photograph Wood Textures for 3D and Design in 2026

中文

Capturing high-quality wood textures from real surfaces is a fundamental skill for texture artists.

Equipment

You need a camera shooting RAW at minimum 20 megapixels a lens between 35mm and 85mm and a circular polarizer to reduce surface glare. A tripod ensures sharp results.

Shooting Technique

Photograph the surface straight on perpendicular to the wood grain. Fill the frame completely with the texture leaving no edges or background visible.

Lighting

Avoid direct sunlight which creates harsh shadows. Overcast sky provides ideal diffused light. Indoors use two softbox lights at 45-degree angles for even illumination.

Post-Processing

In Lightroom flatten the exposure correct any color cast and increase clarity slightly. Export at maximum resolution then process for seamless tiling in Photoshop using the Offset filter method.
